چکیده

A considerable number of language mechanisms have been proposed during the last several years, to specify and implement concurrent object-oriented programs. The major concern of these proposals is to design an expressive language that provides extensible concurrent processing and synchronization features. Almost all these efforts, however, have focused on the multiple-clientsingle-server model where each server determines its synchronization semantics without cooperating with other objects. We believe that object-oriented concurrent languages must not only support a single-server model, but cooperatively synchronizing servers as well. We refer to this as multi-server synchronization. This paper first classifies multi-server synchronization in jive categories. The intention here is to define a framework for evaluating current approaches and identifying the requirements for designing new languages. In addition, this paper presents a composable multi-server synchronization technique, adopting the concept of composition-filters.

Dynamic Scheduling of Multimedia Documents in a Single Server Multiple Clients Environment

In a typical single server and multiple client distributed multimedia system, clients may send sporadic requests to the server for certain multimedia documents. The requests must be served with a fast response time and with the required quality of service guarantee. This requires the server to determine the transmission schedule of each multimedia stream while ensuring necessary interand intras...

Real-Time Multiple-Description Coding of Speech Signals

When sending speech data over lossy networks like the internet, multiple-description (MD) coding is a means to improve the perceived quality by dividing the data into multiple descriptions which are then sent as separate packets. In doing so the speech signal can still be decoded even if only parts of these descriptions are received. The present paper describes the structure of a software which...

Alligator, a Web-based Distributed Visual Programming Environment

In this paper we present Alligator, a Web system for distributed visual programming. Based on a client-server extensible modular architecture, its purpose is to allow people without any particular computer skills to build their own applications, by connecting to a Web site and visually composing data-flow programs.

Speed Up Your Database Client with Adaptable Multithreaded Prefetching

In many client/server object database applications, performance is limited by the delay in transferring pages from the server to the client. We present a prefetching technique that can avoid this delay, especially where there are several database servers. Part of the novelty of this approach lies in the way that multithreading on the client workstation is exploited, in particular for activities...

Discrete Time Analysis of Multi-Server Queueing System with Multiple Working Vacations and Reneging of Customers‎

This paper analyzes a discrete-time $Geo/Geo/c$ queueing system with multiple working vacations and reneging in which customers arrive according to a geometric process. As soon as the system gets empty, the servers go to a working vacations all together. The service times during regular busy period, working vacation period and vacation times are assumed to be geometrically distributed. Customer...
